Okay, so a smoothie is a smoothie, no “milk” required before it but I really had no clue what to call this drink in English. This is a popular old-school drink that I first tasted about 15 years ago in Taiwan and it’s called “木瓜牛奶” (mu gua niu nai), literally “Papaya-Milk” when translated. How about we just call it Papaya Milk Smoothie then?
Papaya Milk Smoothie is superbly smooth and creamy with the sweetness of papaya as the highlight of the beverage. I was just thinking of a non-alcoholic drink to serve during the New Year Eve’s celebrations and this came to mind; it was brought back into my memory after reminiscing about my very first trip to Taiwan when I tried an amazing variety of food that I had never tasted before, all of which blew ~ my ~ mind ~ ! I remember tasting Oyster Vermicelli, Braised Pork Rice and this Papaya Smoothie drink all for the first time and the sensation and taste of each lingered on my palate for a long time after. My mother finally got around to cooking Braised Pork Rice at home after coming across a recipe book a few years after that trip but she never recreated Papaya Milk Smoothie.
As you can imagine, Papaya Milk Smoothie is sure to be a hit with the kids and you can consider switching up your healthy smoothies with this as well. It is really simple to make, and tastes absolutely fantastic. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have!
